451 Research Keynote: Grand Strategy for Digital Transformation: Partner for Success
Melanie Posey - Research Vice President and General Manager, Voice of the Enterprise, 451 Research
General Session
The Digital Revolution is being powered by cloud but businesses and their service provider partners need a strategy to achieve digital transformation. The managed services approach for the next phase must include professional services, multi-cloud/hybrid implementation and management, and partner ecosystems to deliver bundled, lifecycle-oriented digital transformation capabilities. “Beyond infrastructure” services will continue to be a vital maintenance capability that businesses look to service providers to offer – akin to changing the lightbulbs in the building. Going forward, however, there is also an opportunity to provide transformation-oriented professional services and multi-cloud/hybrid implementation to help businesses rewire the building support new requirements (and keep the lights on).
9:20am - 9:50am
Building partnerships with the Hyperscalers
Eric Hanselman - Chief Analyst, 451 Research
Miles Ward - Head of Solutions Architecture, Google Cloud
General Session
Hyperscalers continue to dominate the Cloud market. Their scope and scale have enabled them to build rich service portfolios that are difficult to compete against. Rather than compete, there is an opportunity for service providers to partner with Hyperscalers. This panel discussion will dive into the minds of leading Hyperscale providers to enable service providers to better understand how to create complementary relationships with Hyperscalers. We will address topics and questions such as:

- In what areas are Hyperscalers looking for partners?
- What are the expectations that Hyperscalers have for their partners?
- How do hyperscalers select their partners?
- What staffing and material commitment is required to partner with a Hyperscaler?
- How can a potential partner start the process with a Hyperscaler?

It’s not about the price, it’s about the value
Owen Rogers - Research Director, Digital Economics Unit, 451 Research
    Track 1
While much of discussion about Cloud Services has centered on price, what enterprises are truly looking for is value. The Cloud Price Index continues to show declines in prices as the hyperscale providers race to the floor. Based on 451’s Voice of the Enterprise research, enterprises are willing to pay a premium to ensure quality of service for key applications. Beyond that, various hybrid models offer enterprises the ability to create operational flexibility. Other points of differentiation such as geographic coverage and risk management as well as service models such as serverless and bare metal offer a number of opportunities to create greater value for enterprises. This session will focus on the different points of differentiation which can enable cloud providers to avoid the commodity trap.

    LEADERSHIP PANEL SESSION FEATURING
  • Clinton France, Founder/CEO, Krystallize Technologies
  • George Karidis, CEO, Virtuozzo
  • 3:55pm - 4:35pm
Managed Security Services - The Good, The Bad and The Ugly
Dan Thompson - Senior Analyst, 451 Research
Aaron Sherrill - Senior Analyst, 451 Research
    Track 2
We’re past the point of product pushing – that’s actually part of the problem. Selling through the fear, ‘tyranny of the urgent’, or one-off point solutions may close some deals, but it likely won’t turn one-time customers into lasting business relationships. Companies today are looking for well thought out, managed solutions, which will help them minimize cyberattack risks and stay compliant with industry and federal regulations. The question now is, are services that fill those needs worth offering for your organization? In this session we’ll take a look at the following:

    - Where are enterprises struggling and what service(s) can you offer to fits their needs
    - Services that could be good, but are usually poorly delivered
    - Services that use to be strategic but are now just a commodity Services that your company should walk away from immediately (and things your company should quit saying)
    - Should your company even be offering Managed Security Services?
    4:35pm - 4:55pm
Service Providers’ Secret Path to Success in a Hyperscale World
Orlando Bayter - CEO and Founder, Ormuco
    General Session
The history of IT and telecommunications trends has been a pendulum that swings from on-premises to off-premises and back. The advent of public cloud is the most recent swing in that pendulum - a swing that is bringing both disruption and opportunity to hosting & colocation provider's businesses.

There is good news for providers hoping to leverage these opportunities to transform business models. By leveraging customer relationships to drive new revenue streams and create new value, they can address their customer’s demands to set the terms for cloud consumption where and how they want.

In this panel session, moderated by Rory Duncan, Research Director – 451 Research, Ormuco CEO Orlando Bayter and hosting providers Managed.com and Olympus.io will debate the real-world experiences of their digital transformation and outline how customers can offer both the agility of hyperscale and on-premises control while delivering powerful economics.
    4:55pm - 5:35pm
11 Conversations About the Future that We Need to Have Right Now.
Nicholas Thompson - Editor in Chief, Wired
    General Session
What, for example, does it mean to have free speech online, and how have our conceptions of what that means changed in recent years? How should we think about, and plan for, the cyberwars of the future. And does artificial intelligence need a kill switch? My hope isn't to give answers—some of the questions are just too hard—but to have a conversation, in the hopes that many people, having many more conversations, will lead society to make better decisions that create an even better future.

Finding Success in Technical Careers: Understanding Where Gender Viewpoints Diverge
Melanie Posey - Research Vice President, Voice of the Enterprise, Cloud Transformation, 451 Research
    Ballroom 3
As part of an ongoing partnership, Women in Technology International (WITI) and 451 Research have joined together to conduct a survey on how gender viewpoints differ in the workplace. The survey, conducted in June and July 2017 and completed by 1,878 respondents currently working in a science, technology, engineering or math (STEM) related field, touched on a variety of topics to better understand what factors have helped shape employees’ careers and what challenges they face in the workplace. To better understand where gender might result in different points of view, the survey was fielded to both women and men.

During this session we will share key findings from this report along with related life experiences from our panelists.

High-value Partnering: why 'sell with' is the new 'sell through' for vendors and providers
Rory Duncan - Research Director, 451 Research
    General Session
In the era of cloud, the significance of distribution to the supply chain is changing dramatically. Channel partners have moved-on from ‘tin shifting’ commoditized IT, instead working in tandem with vendors and providers to supply new kinds of complex cloud services to meet enterprise demand. As the focus moves from cloud construction to cloud consumption, the importance of these relationships increases, shifting the market opportunity to an ecosystem of connected specialists. Modern systems integrators, managed service providers and VARs are bringing higher-value, niche and vertical offerings to market that traditional ‘sell through’ models however, do not address. In this session, Rory Duncan, Research Director for Managed Services & Hosting, will outline the revised ‘sell with’ strategies that vendors and service providers alike must adopt in order to facilitate the delivery of high-growth services - including managed private cloud, security and disaster recovery – in partnership with their channel ecosystem.

Scale vs. Services: Finding, funding and valuing assets needed for the digital future
Kelly Morgan - Research Vice President, Services, 451 Research
    General Session
As enterprises evolve their digital infrastructure, service providers need to piece together offerings that will differentiate themselves without breaking the bank. In this panel we will discuss how M&A can provide some missing pieces and what those pieces may be. Join our distinguished panel of experts as we discuss key questions such as: Who is likely to go shopping? What firms will be targets? Are networks and datacenters more or less sought after than services and software providers? How are assets being valued? What financing is available and on what terms? We will debate these and more as we explore trends impacting this dynamic sector.

David vs. Goliath: What Are the Opportunities for Service Providers?
Al Sadowski - Research Vice President, Voice of the Service Provider, 451 Research
    General Session
The hyperscale public cloud providers dominate the conversation when it comes to the enterprise journey to the cloud, but the regional and specialized providers are not going away.

    - What happens when Microsoft Azure Stack becomes GA?
    - How will tier 2 and tier 3 providers differentiate?
    - Which managed services are most desirable according to enterprises?
    - Are there other providers that will join the Azure, Google and AWS hyperscale party?

A provocative panel of industry insiders will debate these and other questions in a can’t-miss session.
